Sharing the love! Guest post by Wedding Swap

The following is a guest post from Wedding Swap founders, Zoe and Lucille.

With over 120,000 weddings a year and an annual turnover of 4.3 billion dollars, the Australian wedding industry is booming! However when it comes to assessing the carbon footprint of your wedding, there are very few options for eco conscious brides and grooms.

This issue was brought to our attention following Zoe’s amazing wedding last year. When the confetti had settled, we were left with a mountain of perfectly good, barely used wedding supplies – hundreds of envelopes, candles, rolls of organza, glass jars, napkins… the list goes on. What had other couples done with all these leftover supplies? Had they thrown them out? Surely not! We decided to put our heads together to create a place for brides and grooms to share the love with other couples and recycle. The Result? Wedding Swap.

Wedding Swap (www.weddingswapshop.com.au) is a free marketplace, where married folk and the betrothed can share/trade/swap preloved wedding products. Wedding Swap’s goal is to mix the old with the new, put a modern twist on something ‘borrowed’ and spread the love between couples! We aim to make ‘budget’ cool again by encouraging people to recycle and reuse, while not compromising on style & perfection.

We are also spreading the word about eco friendly trends and technologies that can help brides reduce their impact on the environment. Here are a few green hints to help you in planning your wedding:

1. Stationery – between save-the-date, seating plans, RSVP and thank you cards, the impact of wedding stationery can really ad up. We suggest using recycled paper, eco-friendly printers, soy based inks and consider digital communication where possible (including custom built websites or apps like bridepass.com).

2. Flowers – make sure you use seasonal, local, organic arrangements. Even consider faux flowers that can be reused and resold on Wedding Swap.

3. Transport – consider having the reception and ceremony at the same place to reduce need for transport. Encourage car-pooling between guests and offset any travel needed. Look at local options for you honeymoon or an ecotourism destination.

4. Decorations – Capitalise on the romance of candle light to reduce energy usage and encourage the use of recycled items in table decorations such as glass jars, sea shells or driftwood.

5. Food – Source locally grown, organic and seasonal produce to reduce impact on the environment.

So if you’re about to tie the knot or have a garage full of leftover supplies – check it out, share the love and recycle!

Warmest,

Zoe & Lucille
